With the experience of more than 40 years Dr. Vivek Jawali serves as the Chief Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon and Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at Fortis Hospitals. He is a trailblazer in the field of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery in India and has an impressive track record, having conducted over 18,000 Cardiothoracic and vascular surgeries to date. Additionally, he has received nominations as a council member to the newly established Medical Council of India (MCI), the preeminent statutory body responsible for governing medical education standards and recognizing medical qualifications within the country. Dr. Jawali is also a member of the MCI's academic council. Pioneering India's first Awake Cardiac Surgery in June 1999, a procedure performed without general anesthesia or a ventilator, using continuous high thoracic epidural anesthesia. Achieving the world's first Awake Open Heart Surgery in April 2002, where a 74-year-old patient underwent triple bypass with aortic valve replacement without general anesthesia or a ventilator. Dr. Vivek Jawali achieved several notable milestones in Indian cardiac surgery, including ● Performing India's first beating heart bypass surgery in 1992. ● Conducting India's Minimally Invasive Bypass Surgery (MIDCAB) in September 1994. ● Pioneering India's first Awake Cardiac Surgery in June 1999, which involved surgery without general anesthesia or a ventilator, performed under continuous high thoracic epidural anesthesia. ● Achieving the world's first Awake Open Heart Surgery in April 2002, wherein a 74-year-old patient underwent triple bypass with aortic valve replacement without general anesthesia or a ventilator. Dr. Jawali holds a prominent role as a founding member of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgeons (ISMICS) and is the sole Indian member on the editorial board of its journal, Innovations in Cardiac Surgery. Additionally, he serves as a council member of the Asian Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons. His groundbreaking work and leadership have significantly advanced the field of cardiac surgery in India and internationally. Dr. Jawali's influence extends beyond the operating room. He served as the President of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS) in 2008 and is a founding member of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgeons (ISMICS). He is uniquely distinguished as the sole Indian member on the editorial board of ISMICS's journal, Innovations in Cardiac Surgery.
