PTCA Surgery

What is PTCA ?

An Angioplasty is a minimal surgical procedure used to widen the obstructed arteries or veins of the heart. The procedure is performed on patients who have suffered a heart attack.  When a person suffers from atherosclerosis, fatty plaque builds up inside the heart’s arteries. Consequently, blocked and clogged arteries cause severe chest pain and shortness of breath.

Heart surgeries often involve higher risks and complications. Therefore it must be carried out by learned and experienced professionals. India has some of the best hospitals worldwide for angioplasty and other heart surgeries. These hospitals have more than 98 percent success rates and have world-class infrastructure.

Types of PTCA

Angioplasty Ballon Procedure

Under this process, a small catheter with a deflated balloon is inserted into the arteries. Once the catheter is closed to the plaque, the balloon is inflated. As a result, the blockage is removed, boosting the blood flow into the heart.

Stent Placement in the Heart

During this procedure, the blockage is removed with the help of a stent. The stent is warped around the balloon and placed at the tip of the catheter. Once it reaches the blockage, the balloon is inflated, which expands the stent and locks it inside the artery.  After this, the balloon is deflated and removed along with the catheter.

Atherectomy

This is a minimal invasion procedure that removes plaque with the help of a tiny blade or laser. Under this process, the plague is shaved off or vaporized with a laser tied to the end of the catheter. The process is done on patients who have already undergone angioplasty but still have plaque blocking blood flow.

Cutting Balloon Angioplasty

As the name suggests, this procedure uses a unique angioplasty device. The process helps in reducing vessel stretch and injury. During this process, a special balloon catheter and small blades are used. Once it reaches the plague, the balloon is inflated, activating the blade and destroying it.

Robotic Angioplasty

This procedure requires minimum invasion and offers greater accuracy. During the robotic procedure, the cardiologist uses live x rays to track the position of the guide wires. The robotic arms provide the precise placement of the stent, which is not possible manually during complex cases.

Diagnosis

Besides the regular medical history checkup, doctors perform a series of tests to prepare for the angioplasty. These tests include:

  • Chest X-Ray
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Blood tests
  • Coronary Angiogram

Procedure for PTCA surgery?

The process begins with the doctor providing local anesthesia into the groin area. Afterward, a guided wire with the introducer is placed inside the femoral artery. Next, the diagnostic catheter is advanced into the blood vessel with the help of an introducer. Once the catheter reaches the aorta, the guided wire is removed, and then the doctor injects dye and takes an x-ray.  Depending upon the severity of the blockage, the doctor may use the balloon or stent placement procedure to widen the passage for blood flow. Before removing the catheter, the doctor may take the final x-ray to check for changes in the arteries.
