Heart Valve Replacement Surgery in India: Choosing Between Mechanical and Tissue Valves
When it comes to heart valve replacement surgery in India, patients often face a critical decision:…
Infertility is primarily a disease of the reproductive system. It makes people unable to have children. It can affect both men and women. Male infertility is basically a problem in which men have problems with their reproductive system. It means men cannot get their female partners pregnant.
If you suspect that you are infertile, this article is for you, and we will give you knowledge about the best infertility treatments available in India. Many tests can detect fertility problems. Once the cause is found, it becomes easy to get the treatment, which may include medicines or surgery. Many couples treated for fertility are able to have babies now. This is only possible due to cutting-edge technology and the availability of skilled doctors in India. Let us talk about how you can avail fertility treatment in India.
What happens under normal conditions?
The man’s body makes tiny cells known as sperms. During sex, these sperm are released into a woman’s body. The male reproductive system makes, stores, and transports sperm. Hormones control this process.
The sperm and male hormones known as testosterone are made in the two testicles. When sperm leaves the testicles, it goes into a tube known as epididymis.
Just before ejaculation, the sperm goes into the vas deferens from the epididymis. During ejaculation, the sperm mixes with semen, and then it comes out of the penis.
Male reproductive health depends upon how normally your body makes sperm and releases it out of your body.
Male Infertility Causes
Obstructions
As already told above, sperms are made in testicles. They spend 2 to 10 days from passing through the epididymis to the vas deferens (the long muscular tube that carries sperm from the testicles to the urethra). The vas deferns ejaculates the sperm, and after that, it mixes with semen.
During ejaculation, muscular contraction forces the semen into the urethra and then out of the penis. Blockage or absence of tubes ( vas deferns) can be a cause of male infertility. Blockages and absence may be congenital or due to any injury.
Sperm Disorders
Another cause of male infertility may be due to sperm disorders. It can be due to:
● Azoospermia: the semen does not contain any sperm. It can be due to blockage or testicles not producing sperm.
● Oligospermia: insufficient sperm count, which is not enough to bring about conception.
● Abnormal shape: a healthy sperm is shaped like a tadpole. Abnormally shaped sperms do not fuse into women’s eggs.
● Poor Motility: a healthy sperm has a lashing tail, which allows it to swim in the womens reproductive system. Sperm with poor Motility cannot swim at all.
Functional Problems
● Impotence is the inability to maintain an erection during sexual intercourse.
● Premature ejaculation
● Removal of the prostate gland
● Disorders like multiple sclerosis or diabetes
● When the immune system starts making antibodies that hinder the natural functioning of sperms.
Hormonal Problems
The pituitary gland influences the production of male sex hormones known as testosterone under the influence of the hypothalamus. A relatively uncommon cause of male infertility may be the improper functioning of the pituitary gland.
Environment and lifestyle factors
This includes the use of tobacco, heavy alcohol, marijuana, steroids, and exposure to toxins. These are the major male infertility causes.
Who is likely to deal with male infertility?
The following people are at an increased risk of male infertility:
● Pre-existing genetic condition
● Use of alcohol and drugs
● Severe mumps infection
● Hernia repairs
● Hormone disorder
● Wearing tight underwear
● Injury in the groin area
● Retrograde ejaculation occurs when sperm is forced back into the bladder
● Erectile dysfunction
● History of STD
● Urinary tract infection
● Use of certain types of medication for treatment of anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, and cancer
Symptoms
The main symptom of male infertility is the inability to have a child. In some cases, an underlying disorder may also be a cause of male infertility. Please make sure to contact your healthcare provider if you experience the following symptoms:
● Problems with sexual function
● Pain or lump in testicles
● Inability to smell
● Recurrent respiratory infections
● Decreased facial hair
● Low sperm count
Male Fertility Tests
Tests to detect male infertility include:
● Semen analysis
● Blood tests
● Ultrasound of testicles and scrotum
● Testicular biopsy
● Hormonal test
● Vasography
● Genetic testing
Can Male infertility be treated?
Yes, male infertility can be treated depending on the underlying causes. Various treatment options to treat male infertility are:
Lifestyle Changes: These include maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise and avoiding alcohol.
Medications: It involves hormonal treatment to boost sperm production.
Surgery: It involves various procedures like TESA and Micro TESE.
Counselling and Support: Dealing with infertility can be challenging. Counselling and support can help you navigate the emotional aspects of fertility issues.
Male Infertility Treatment Available in India
There are various treatment options to treat male fertility in India. Let us understand them one by one:
Surgery
Bloating of veins inside the testes, also known as varicocele, may impair male fertility. This condition can be treated via surgery.
The tubes in the male reproductive system that transports sperm can be blocked due to injury. These blockages can be surgically removed and repaired.
If surgery doesn’t work, the man may undergo a surgical procedure called percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA). Under local anesthetic, a slender needle is inserted into the epididymis. Sperms are removed and either used immediately for ICSI or frozen for later use.
Hormone Therapy
The pituitary gland in the brain is responsible for the release of a hormone known as gonadotropin. This hormone stimulates the production of sperm. In some cases, male infertility can be caused due to insufficient levels of gonadotropins. When you take these hormones as medicines, it can boost sperm production.
Artificial Insemination
In this case, this means semen is collected, washed, and concentrated. It is then introduced into the female’s uterus through the cervix. This is a viable option when:
● The concentration of sperm is low in men’s semen
● Man is impotent
● Seminal fluid contains antibodies against sperm
In in vitro fertilization, the sperm from the man is collected and placed in a special incubator. The ovaries of women are stimulated with hormone injections, and when the eggs mature, they are taken out through an ultrasound-guided procedure.
The eggs are then mixed with sperm and placed in a special incubator. The eggs fertilise to develop an embryo, which is then implanted into a woman’s uterus through the cervix.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection
Sometimes, semen has very few sperms to make fertilization possible through IVF. ICSI injection can be used in such cases.
In ICSI, each egg is injected with a single sperm using a needle. The fertilized egg changes to the embryo and is then transferred into the female uterus at the right time.
TESA
It is a major male infertility treatment option. TESA known as Testicular Sperm Aspiration, is a procedure used to treat male infertility. It involves extracting sperm from testicles using a fine needle. TESA is often used when normal sperm retrieval becomes challenging. The collected sperm can then be used for in vitro fertilization to achieve pregnancy.
Micro TESE
Micro TSE or Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction, is a special procedure that is used to take sperm from testicles in case of severe infertility. It uses a high-powered microscope to identify and extract a small amount of testicular tissue that is highly likely to contain viable sperm. This technique is primarily used to treat men dealing with azoospermia, where sperm production gets impaired.
PESA
Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration is a medical procedure used to collect sperm from the epididymis, a coiled tube where sperm matures and is stored. During this procedure, a fine needle is inserted into the epididymis to aspirate sperm. This procedure is used when the reproductive tract of a man is blocked, thus preventing sperm production.
PICSI
Physiological Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a technique that involves selecting sperms on their ability to bind to hyaluronic acid, a substance that is present in female eggs. This method aims at the natural sperm selection process and improves the chances of selecting high-quality sperm for fertilization.
Prevention tips
There is nothing that can be done to treat male infertility that is caused by genetic disorders. However, here are some tips to prevent it:
● Avoid having sex with unknown people to reduce the risk of STD
● Avoid illegal drugs to maintain male reproductive health
● Avoid radiation when possible
● Avoid exposure to toxic substances
● Avoid frequent use of alcohol
● Observe good personal hygiene
● Avoid long and hot baths
● Wear loose-fitting underwear
Prognosis
Just because you have male infertility issues does not mean that you cannot have your child. There are many treatment options available in India. If you work with your partner and a urologist, you can increase the chances of conception.
